A new extinct spadefoot toad species, Spea labreae, was identified from ancient fossils. Dr. Alberto Cruz discovered the unusual bone while studying collections at La Brea Tar Pits. This finding adds to the limited fossil record of Ice Age amphibians in North America. The toad’s presence offers new insights into ancient Los Angeles’ environmental history. Researchers also found evidence of a Mexican burrowing toad in the same region.
